Jajah - Free International Calls

#Voip, #Telecommunications, #Phone Service, #Jahjah, #Free Calls

Alright, well, I am really late on this one, I know. I heard about Jajah a while back, but never bothered to check it out; not until today when I found that Futurephone has gone down, so I can no longer make cheap 712 Iowa-to-Canada calls (it was basically a routing service using VoIP to connect calls so you just pay in country rates). I wanted to call Canada, but needed a solution better than my current rates (ATT is broken so I can't check rates, but I remember it being a quite a bit - I just have .10/minute national+$2.00 month, but nothing for international. I think it was something like .30/minute, probably more).
So I started searching around for an alternative to these 712 Iowa Voips, and found Jajah - again. I decided to check it out a little more than before, and I simply couldn't find any faults with it - nothing really bad online in blogs or anything, and the service seemed so simple, why not try it out? So I did, and I must say, I am QUITE impressed.
The service is very basic: you enter your phone number online, then the recipient of the call, and then hit call. The service initiates the call, and your phone rings. You pick up, and it connects to the recipient through Voip; their phone rings. Everything after that is pretty basic - it's just a regular phone call.
What really makes the service shine though are the rates. If both parties are using Jajah (both phone numbers are registered), then the call is usually FREE (up to 500 minutes a month/150 minutes a week, so about 8 hours a month free long distance). And even if only you are using Jajah, the rates are pretty good: my call to Canada was only 3.1 cents/minute. That's right, around NINE CENTS cheaper than my telco. And a call to the US would be 2.8c/minute.

I can't comment on the quality of the phone call as I only got an answering machine on the other end, but it did work in connecting. I have since registered and urge others to do the same, as I think telcos have really got a stranglehold on us with one of the most amazing inventions of our time. And if you do sign up, let me know here and I'll search for you on the site (or, my email is d3vkit [at] gmail [dot] com).

So hit the source and try Jajah out: you get about a dollar free credit to start out, and then you can easily add more money to the account. I think I may cancel my telco long distance.

Does it only work with landlines? Or does it work with Cell's as well?

The rates are different sometimes, but yes you can make calls to and from a mobile phone. Here is what I get for rates from US to US:

From landline: 2.8 cent to landline or FREE between Jajah Users.
2.8 cent to mobile phone or FREE between Jajah Users.

From mobile phone: 2.8 cent to landline or FREE between Jajah Users.
2.8 cent to mobile phone or FREE between Jajah Users.

I don't really know how cells work (you use minutes when receiving calls right?), so this might still affect minutes, and I think cells have free long distance usually don't they?

I need to make more money so I can get a cell phone.
