Photoshop Vs GIMPshop

#Photoshop, #The Gimp, #Web Design, #Opinions, #Review, #GIMPshop

I've been using photoshop for a few years now, and I really love it. I find it easy to use, and it's the defacto web design software available. But some years ago I heard about the Gimp, which is a completely free, open source graphic design package which, while it doesn't claim to be a photoshop clone, a cheap replacement for everyone's favorite photo editing software is what it's most often used for, and what I use it for whenever I decide I'd like to try something a little more on the OSS side.
Well, there are a number of differences between PS and Gimp, mostly in it's presentation within Windows. GIMPshop, a derivative of Gimp, sets to change that. Does it succeed? Find out my thoughts below.

Wow but it's been a while since I've posted a WRV - What I am now dubbing 'weakly random video' (nice little pun eh?) So without further ado, let's check out one of the funniest new shows on television - unfortunately on MTV - The Human Giant, a sketch comedy program starring Aziz Ansari, Jason Woliner, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel. They've got a cult NYC following already since they came right out of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, which, btw, if you liked the Comedy Central show UCB, you'll love Human Giant. Check after the break for some magic, and hit the source to see their official website. Oh and leave me some damn comments people!

WRV: Youtube Customer Service

#Customer Service, #YouTube, #Videos, #Humor, #WRV, #Weekly Random Video

Sorry for the late posting, my jobs been keeping me a bit busy. Here's this weeks WRV, entitled Youtube Customer Service: Earplugs Required. I've never worked phones (although I know those that have), but I can attest to the fact that it doesn't matter if it's on the phone or in person, people can be jerks for no real reason. I don't think I ever imagined Youtube would even NEED phone tech support, but I can see this happening. I think sometime I ought to call in and let them know how much they rock... but I'm sure they would just be annoyed that I was wasting their time. Anyways, watch the video after the break, and maybe throw some funny customer service stories in the comments?

Hardcore video game nerds unite, rejoice, and watch funny videos. I would have saved this for a WRV but this is too cool to let slide for 4 more days.
New Super Mario Bros.

You can catch one more after the break :D You can find the rest in the source.

[DEAD] Best DVD Deal of 2007?

#Best Buy, #B1G1, #BOGO, #Oscars, #Sale, #DVD

Best Buy is having an UNADVERTISED sale this week (hopefully all week) in celebration of the Oscars! We found out Sunday night, at which point it was too late to post (if it turned out to be a one day event), but it seems that it is an event for the week, so get ready to get your MIND BLOWN. Okay so it's not that incredible but it is definitely note worthy.

It seems last weeks special edition dvd's, which were previously buy one get one free, are now $9.99... but still buy 1 get 1. That means an average of $5 a movie, most of which pull $20 easy. Click the permalink to read the full list.

[UPDATE 1]: Forgot to mention that you can snag a 300 promo disc w/movie cash for FREE with any DVD purchase. Many have reported being able to get one for one with the dvd's in the B1G1F. It's in the ad and can be seen here.

[UPDATE 2]: Looks like the B1G1 deal is dead as of Wednsday; hope everyone was able to get in on this.

Babel BD For (Almost) Free!

#Babel, #Sale, #BD, #Blu-Ray, #Almost Free

Gameznflix.com has Babel (Blu-Ray) listed as $0. There's still shipping, which is extraordinarily high at $4.50, but with a list price of $0, I think that's something we can all agree can be looked past. Sort of a forest for the trees thing, I think.
Anyway, check out the "source" below to try to snag a copy before this mistake is fixed. And let us know in the comments how things go for you; I've yet to receive email confirmation of my order, although I did receive a confirmation number. Paper copies FTW!

Edit: I totally didn't see that it was BD. Oh well, now I have an HD-DVD movie (Serenity, $7.50 FTW), and a BD movie. Better get a combo player sometime in the future! Still an EXCELLENT deal, especially for a BD disc.

Edit number TWO: Apparently, Gameznflix has some spotty policies. I received no email confirmation, and neither did others, nor a shipping statement when it shipped: it just came. They also charge you IMMEDIATELY, and apparently if there is a problem, it's tough to get them to refund. Hopefully they didn't just leave the movie up even though stock ran out... but if they already made a price mistake...

360 to Incorporate Blu-ray (when Hell Freezes Over)

#Xbox 360, #Blu-Ray, #Media, #Movies, #Video Games, #Microsoft

So, about a month late, I hear from a friend of mine that MS was thinking of installing a BD player in their Xbox 360 gaming console. I found this very interesting, since HD-DVD, last I heard, was being fully supported by Microsoft. So I did some legwork, and found out the story broke about a month ago, and that the story was a completely different one as well.
It seems Peter Moore had previously said this:
Microsoft would consider adding an external Blu-ray drive to the Xbox 360 in the future, should the right market conditions emerge. According to Peter Moore, corporate VP in charge of fun stuff at Microsoft, those conditions would be the emergence of Blu-ray as the clear winner in the next-generation optical disc format battles.

This seems pretty clear that what he was saying was that SHOULD HD-DVD not be the victor in this new-fangled format war, MS would consider BD. Which I'm sure would be at a point where HD-DVD was pretty much non-existent, which also seems to be not anytime soon at all.
Of course everyone the world over took this to mean MS had given up and that the 360 would have BD drives in them the following week. So MS issued this:
It is important to understand the context in which that statement was made. Microsoft firmly stands behind the HD-DVD format as the best choice for our consumers. As we've said before, we're confident that HD-DVD will bring the excitement of high definition movies to the consumer faster and at a greater value. We believe that consumers have signalled [sic] what format they want to enjoy high definition DVD and we're going to follow them down that path.

So, it seems to me that what MS said was pretty much a logical statement with no real bearing on the future, as we don't know where that will lead us. I for one would like to see BD and HD-DVD coexist (or both die off and a very superior format arise), but it seems as though the studios are really pushing for one or the other.
Anyone here have a preferred format? If you could design the next-gen media, what features would you include?
